Laura Hawes
Teaching since 1996 Laura has studied Vinyasa, Kripalu, Ashtanga,
Iyengar, Viniyoga and Restorative Yoga. She is known for her open, heart-centered
teaching style, encouraging her students to find the teacher within. She
strongly believes that yoga is part of a health-centered approach to life, and
that when practiced regularly, it gives clarity, understanding and perspective
on our own health and life. She currently teaches yoga in San Diego, CA
Producers Note: The Yoga Therapy DVDs are gentle yoga where holding "proper" alignment is somewhat de-emphasized as is often the case with Svaroopa yoga and Viniyoga, and because this is a DVD. This may seem to contrast with Iyengar yoga where holding proper alignment is always emphasized. There are very few Iyengar yoga DVDs on the market because proper alignment is a very personal thing that is impossible to convey in a video. In fact it is impossible for any teacher to know what proper alignment is. Yoga teachers give suggestions for you to explore. Iyengar teachers give detailed suggestions and other yoga teachers give less detail. What yoga teachers can never know is how your body wants to unravel it's stored up tension. That is a personal journey that takes time, patience, and a willingness to explore. Iyengar teachers are great teachers because their slow patient teaching style helps with a student's exploration but the notion of "proper" alignment can often be an impediment to exploration especially when conveyed through a DVD. When a yoga student believes in the concept of "proper" alignment there is usually a very old memory associated with "proper", or "good", or "correct". Exploring this issue with yoga is very valuable. There are advantages and disadvantages to perfectionist attitude towards your body/mind relationship. It is good to explore this during yoga (notice your thoughts and the associated tension and let them go) and to read the philosophies behind the teaching styles. I like: Light on Yoga by B.K.S.
